Detailed Missions


  • Provide technical knowledge and design tools for the designers of 1.3-μm band and 1.5-μm band DFB laser diodes as well as training by reviewing the past accumulated results in publications.


  • Provide theoretical models for (1) lasing mode, (2) lasing spectrum, (3) quantum well, (4) grating coupling coefficient, (5) dynamic-characteristics (AM and FM response, dynamic line-shape under modulation), and (6) noise characteristics (Relative Intensity Noise, FM noise, and Spectral linewidth).


  • Provide possible design candidates originally produced by Dr. Makino based on the real product design experience as well as design examples in publications.


  • Provide Matlab simulation programs in user friendly formats:  In running the program, the user is asked to input "selection" or "value" (default values are provided) in each step. Simulation is quite efficient (computation time is mostly instantaneous on normal PCs since it is based on mostly analytical models).   


  • ​​Provide lists of the DFB key parameters (grating coupling coefficient, cavity length, facet coating etc.) of 10 Gb/s, and 40 Gb/s DFB laser diodes in publications based on extensive search.     


  • Provide lists of basic laser parameters (optical gain, differential gain, spectral linewidth, linewidth enhancement factor, relaxation resonance frequency, nonlinear optical gain coefficient, K factor etc.) in publications based on extensive search.
