​​Chyeguide LLC was founded by Dr. Toshihiko Makino, in Irvine, California in June 2019 based on his experience over 35 years in DFB laser diode technologies in industries  (such as Nortel, Fujitsu, and other companies and also as technology consultant).


The company name, “Chyeguide”, is the combined word of “Chye” and “Guide”. The pronunciation of “Chye” is like "chi"- "ye" in English way, and "chi'-"e" in Japanese way. The meaning in Japanese is similar to the English word, “wisdom”. Therefore, Chyeguide is named aiming for “guiding with wisdom”.   


The difficulty of designing the DFB laser diode chip is that too many design parameters are involved, which are related to high level physics. After the original product deign is transferred to manufacturing, the design method and its background may not be transferred properly to the successor designers due to its complications and professional background difference.   


In the design process,  we need to determine an initial design efficiently, repeat experimental trials and confirm the performance with the product specifications. Therefore, efficient  simulations with less computation time and with selected essential laser parameters are critically important.  Although commercial simulation software with self-consistent numerical simulations can be used,  it may loose insight among many produced simulation curves.  Furthermore, the simulation is based on many unverified laser parameters. Therefore, numerical self-consistent simulation may be limited to the final design optimization.  


Chyeguide has set its mission to provide thedesign method and efficient simulation software with product design examples (unpublished and published).  This is based on the experience of Dr. Makino in the design of DFB laser diode chips in industries from the early 1990's to these days. The technical documents provide the essential theoretical models and their applications to real examples.  The programs of the simulation software are written with using mostly analytical formula in Matlab platform.  


 Another mission of Chyeguide is to help people to learn the science, technology,  engineering, and math (STEM) by utilizing the DFB laser diode as a vehicle, which is a suitable example that requires, for example, "quantum mechanics" in the active layer design (using "quantum well"), "electromagnetism" (wave optics) in the grating design, and random process noise theory in the spontaneous emission treatment.  For the theoretical ​models in the technical documents, the detailed derivations from the fundamental theories are provided. Reading professional textbooks in this field requires quite heavy effort. Knowing the connection of the science to real products can provide strong motivation to learn  the high level physics.
